Welcome to Ragland Herefords
First let me offer a word of thanks to you for taking a few moments to view our new Ragland Hereford web site. We’ve developed this site to provide you with an opportunity to meet our family, learn more about our operation and to showcase results of over five generations and eight decades of hard work and dedication in raising top quality Hereford show steers.

For 35 years Ragland Herefords has focused solely on producing high quality Hereford show steers.  A small operation located in West Texas town of Ralls, Texas with only 60 Hereford cows we’ve concentrated on producing quality not quantity! Our herd primarily has been built through many years of Artificial Insemination. Most of our current cows are ones we’ve raised, kept and bred ourselves.

My great grandfather William Forest Ragland started the operation in Dickens County back in the early 1940’s. As of his passing my grandfather Frank Ragland continued with the operation. This is where some of the first showing of Ragland Herefords begins. My dad Ronnie showed some of the very first home raised Hereford steers at both Dallas State Fair and Houston Livestock show in the late 1950’s. When my grandfather Frank passed away in the early 1980’s my dad continued to progress with his deep passion for raising Hereford cattle. At that time much effort was targeted towards improving the current herd genetics by incorporating some of the nation’s best genetics from the Jim Fiddler Herford Ranch in Stanford, Montana.

These genetics allowed us to produce the 1981 Reserve Grand Champion Hereford Steer and 1989 and 2000 Grand Champion Hereford Steers at the Sandhills Stock Show in Odessa, Texas. Additionally, top honors included the 1978 and 1985 Champion Hereford Steers at the Houston Livestock Show.

Perhaps over the years the type and kind of winning cattle may have changed but at Ragland Herefords our priorities have always remained the same. We’ve continued to focus on producing cattle that are extremely sound, big bodied, jet necked with added muscle all in a moderate package with that cool show steer look.  Our female base goes back generations to some of the heavier muscled Hereford bulls in the industry such as Summit, Barber’s 0174, Moler, Kris Blacks 4114 and Dakota. Herd bulls that we’ve bought include: “Strike Zone” from Perez Hereford’s, “Uptown” from Buchholz, “Members Only” from Hoffman’s and our most recent purchase “Steppin Out” who’s first calf crop hit the ground, fall 2011. We are excited about this new bull and his first calves. As you can tell from his picture he is super stout, moderate with a cool look and his calves are all consistently made that same way. We invite you to stop by anytime and take a look, we can assure you, you’ll be impressed!

Let’s now introduce you to the Ragland family. My dad and mom, Ronnie and Kathleen Ragland who live and farm some 2,000 acres of cotton and wheat near Ralls, Texas located just 30 miles east of Lubbock. It is here where our cows are run during the winter months on wheat. During the summer cows are ran on family owned native grass pastures in Dickens County near Dickens, Texas.

As for me, I’ve been a County Extension Agent for the past 25 years and currently I’m the agent in Randall County Canyon, Texas. My wife Angela is the Marketing Director for the Tri-State Fair in Amarillo, Texas. Our son Brady is a senior at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas majoring in Animal Science Business.  While attending Texas Tech, Brady was also a member of the 2011 National Champion Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Team where he also achieved High Individual at the National contest as well as being named as an All American Team Member in Louisville this past November.

We invite you to call or better yet stop by and take a look at our cattle that we’ve spent eight decades and five generations putting together. If you have any questions feel free to call me at any time.

Thanks,
J. D. Ragland
